Trigger finger or trigger thumb happens when the flexor tendon struggles to glide smoothly through its tendon sheath, causing the digit to click, catch or lock as you bend and straighten it. Where non-surgical options such as steroid injections or splinting haven't given enough relief, a release procedure can be considered, particularly if triggering keeps returning, the digit becomes severely locked, or pain is affecting everyday activities. The procedure involves a small incision near the base of the affected digit to release the tight part of the tendon sheath, giving the tendon room to move freely again. It can usually be performed under local anaesthetic.
