Intravitreal injections deliver medication directly into the vitreous, the gel-like substance inside the eye, most often to treat retinal conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, or macular oedema caused by retinal vein occlusion. The eye is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic before a very fine needle delivers the medication, and the procedure itself is generally quick and performed as an outpatient. Treatment is usually given as a course, with the frequency depending on your condition and how your eye responds, sometimes moving to a 'treat and extend' schedule as things stabilise.
