About this service
A chalazion, or meibomian cyst, is a small, usually painless lump on the eyelid caused by a blocked gland, though larger ones can cause irritation or mild swelling. Many clear on their own with warm compresses and gentle massage, but a persistent or troublesome chalazion can be treated with a quick in-clinic procedure under local anaesthetic to drain the cyst, usually letting you go home the same day. We also carry out other minor lid procedures, including removal of benign eyelid lumps, biopsy of uncertain lesions, and treatment of the tear drainage opening. Most procedures take less than 20–30 minutes, though your overall appointment may run a little longer for preparation and post-procedure checks.
